Meet the Wolf Spider

Wolf Spider, Found commonly in New Jersey

What: Wolf Spider
When: Summer of 2015
Where: Eatontown, New Jersey
How: Indoors, using a macro lens

Wolf spiders are found in abundance in our lawns here in New Jersey. This is a hunting breed, meaning it does not spin a web to catch it's prey, rather it walks around stalking insects to eat. Even though this spider can give humans a painful bite, their bite is not very serious, except to those who may get an allergic reaction to their venom according to The Spruce. Luckily these are not aggressive spiders and do not bite unless threatened or provoked. We would say this spider would fall under the category of being beneficial as it keeps other insects populations in control.

To click this picture, we safely captured this spider as it entered our home in Eatontown, New Jersey. It was then carefully placed in a clear plastic container, and then we got to click this picture using a Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5X Macro Lens and Canon 40D DSLR camera.

After the picture was clicked, the spider was carefully relocated to the lawn where it happily went on it's way to hunting like a wolf, the characteristic that gives it the name.
